Old South Wassail
A hot and luscious punch to begin your holiday celebrations.
4 cups water
1 cup sugar
2 sticks cinnamon
1 ½ tsp. salt
Juice and rind of 3 lemons
Juice and rind of 3 oranges
4 cups sherry

Servings: 14
Combine water, sugar, and salt in the pot. Place over medium high natural-gas heat and stir until sugar has dissolved. Add the cinnamon sticks and the fruit rinds, bring to a simmer, and cook for about 2 minutes. Add the fruit juices and the sherry, and heat the mixture until hot; do not let it simmer. Serve warm in heat-resistant glass cups.
This wassail can be made ahead and, when cooled, stored in the refrigerator. Just reheat before serving.
